There is no cycle path and the footpath is not suitable for road bikes as it is strewn with debris, so we are forced to use the road.

Could anyone explain the hidden message as to why somebody should throw a cup of tea in a polystyrene cup out of the passenger window of his car over my husband as they pass?

Is it a new fashion to throw things at cyclists? A fellow cycling friend had coins thrown at him in Chichester last weekend.
