The decision by Barclays Bank to close the Hailsham branch is truly appalling.

The ‘standard reply’ I have received from Barclays head office merely quotes statistics supposedly supporting their decision, but does not address either the effect on their loyal customers or the town.

I would make two observations.

Firstly, if so few people are apparently using the branch, why is there generally a long queue with a number of the people trying to sort out problems with online and telephone banking, and secondly, Hailsham is a rapidly growing town with the potential for new customers.

So much for head office statistics and forward planning! Having been a customer of Barclays for over 50 years, this move is ‘service’ at its worst, coupled with the suggestion of having to travel to either Eastbourne or Heathfield for face-to-face service. So much for loyalty!
