Development just doesn’t make sense

I AM writing in response to Tony Burton’s letter (Gazette, March 24) relating to current employment within the proposed North Littlehampton site.

He states that much of the employment is seasonal, and admittedly some is, but there are others, like myself, who have worked on this site for the past 26 years.

My company alone employs 50 people, and together with other small businesses we will have to relocate. This will be difficult for businesses like ours and Hall Hunter Partnerships (a very large fruit grower).

Once this huge development is complete, according to Mr Burton, our existing jobs will be replaced with many more offering higher wages and skill levels, which I find a rather detrimental comment. Is he trying to say that the people already employed on the site are unskilled and lowly paid?

I wonder what jobs he is referring to when he states that “new jobs will be created that are more substantial and better suited to the needs of the current and future population to revitalise the town centre”.

What can be more important than the horticultural industry, which supplies the food we eat?

Mr Burton, who does not live in the Littlehampton area, is employed by Greencore, the largest landowner of this site, so obviously he needs to try to sell this proposal to the people of Littlehampton by using propaganda of offering more jobs with higher wages and skills.

We all know this development is almost certain to be passed, as so much money has already been spent on its planning by Greencore, so all local people should be prepared for much more congestion on our roads, with the access from Crossbush junction (A284) on to the A27 being even more unbearable than it is now.

If you would like to object to the North Littlehampton development, please write to Arun district Council, quoting planning ref: LU/47/11/.
