Disappointing seafront

I HAVE had the opportunity to walk down the almost completed West Parade Promenade, and I have to say that I am very disappointed with quality and cleanliness of what I observed.

I do accept that the works are not yet complete, with the railings, the stone resin covering and the gap to the road kerb being three very obvious examples.

My impression of the areas of works which look complete is that there appears to been no pride in what has been left for the public to examine over the festive season. The stone covered rein finish is filthy. Mud that has been split on the surface has not been cleaned off, and the surface could do with a thorough clean and brush-up. There are areas where the surplus stone has still to be swept away. The whole thing is grubby. The whole concept is of a building site, with the builders absent.

I accept that the works have still to be snagged and I am sure that many of the defective matters such as trip hazards in the kerbing, bodged repairs to damaged concrete walls, poorly fitted benches, inadequate grouting to some of the sett areas, loose setts, badly fitting uplights etc will be corrected. I do hope that the professional team will ensure that these and other quality issues are resolved with the contractor.

I do have a criticism for the designer of the gardens – It seems to me that it will be very difficult to cut the grass which is in small niggly shapes and extends under benches though the holes to the timber walls and around the many other objects in the gardens.

My overall impression is that this is currently a prime example of a project costing lots of money, which ends up with something which is worse that when it started. I do hope that that this is what the before and after photographs might show.
