Give up allowance

I READ in another local paper last week that councillors in Telscombe Cliffs have agreed to forego their allowances for a short period in order to provide funding for a community project in their area.

If funding for the Highfields play area is withdrawn (Gazette, August 19), I wonder if our councillors may wish to follow this example.

Clearly, this would be far more effective than simply being photographed with the residents.

Councillors receive very generous allowances, in addition to their occupational pay or pension, and it would be an excellent way of convincing the electorate that the interests of the town really do come first.

In this area we are indeed fortunate to have an army of voluntary workers whether in Scout groups, etc., or with those who are less fortunate than themselves. Many of these give up far more time than councillors and are very often out of pocket as a result.
