Great contribution

ON behalf of past pupils, teachers and parents of Littlehampton Community School, I would like to point out to Sue Constance (Gazette letters, October 1) that the students were indeed taught very high standards and how to succeed in the wider community.

Over the years, the pages of the Littlehampton Gazette have been filled with their academic, cultural and community achievements and the majority of young people in this town have been a credit to us all and made a great contribution in so many ways, from the first student councillors to raising thousands of pounds for local and national charities.

Both my children went on to achieve first class degrees at top universities and their circle of school friends includes qualified doctors, lawyers, business managers, successful entrepreneurs, actors, musicians, journalists and even one or two well-dressed bankers.

As a school boy, teacher and parent I experienced both the blazer and the logo jumper uniform regime and in terms of economy, room to grow, ease of maintenance, climate and day-to-day comfort, the LCS approach wins hands down.

There is nothing smart about a blazer three sizes too big for you and, incidentally, my daughter and her fashion-conscious friends would not have been seen dead in a sports shirt and jumper at weekends.

Finally, if Sue Constance knows of a bank that actually still has a bank manager these days, please let us all know. If I could have my old-style manager back instead of a financial facilities assistant executive adviser, she could wear a yellow cardigan over a purple wet suit for all I care.
