Green and pleasant land of limited resources

I SHARE the feelings of Viv Hankins (Gazette letters, May 27) on the systematic destruction of our green and pleasant land by greedy developers.

I learnt at my grammar school that land was a finite resource – one can't make any more of it, and its use has to be carefully thought out.

If it is covered with housing, it can't be used for agriculture, and such development brings disadvantages such as water deprivation, increased pollution by sewage and waste, and other anti-social effects.

I believe there was a government proposal to promote free-range poultry farming, at the same time imposing unrealistic housing targets on local authorities, thus demonstrating a deficiency in their mental processes.

We can only hope that commonsense prevails.
