Green looking blue

IT must be good that, during the summer months, Littlehampton lays on many different and varied attactions, giving pleasure to local people and to visitors.

Many of these events take place on The Green. My concern is that each event gives the turf considerable punishment and that little seems to be done to help it recover.

Over the last two years it has really suffered and there are now many large, bald patches on The Green – some from events held in 2010 – which are extremely unlikely to recover without some human care.

People tell me that “grass is tough and will recover on its own”. Maybe – but very little improvement has been brought about by nature so far, and the patches are becoming larger.

I wonder whether the council plans to give some care to the turf. I think it is too much to expect nature to do it all.

It might even be a good idea to give The Green a respite from events for a period. It is, after all, a very special place, and needs looking after.
