Harbour master was an asset the town cannot do without

I WAS saddened to read that Colin Hitchcock has been sacked as Littlehampton's harbourmaster (Gazette, March 4), and especially so by the secrecy surrounding his dismissal.

I spend a lot of time by the river and have seen him in action on several occasions, most recently when ushering a steady fleet of visiting sail boats into our harbour.

His skill, professionalism and good humour – especially when directed towards somewhat recalcitrant nautical individualists – was both entertaining and admirable.

I would have thought him to be an asset this town could ill afford to lose!

I hope he does fight his corner and I hope he wins, even if it does cost the council, and ultimately we, the ratepayers, a heap of money.
