I had to smile

I HAD to smile when I read the letter from Elizabeth Downs about the vegetarian options in restaurants (Observer, March 4). It brought back memories of my coach driving days on the continent back in the mid 1980s. We always went to a restaurant in Sorrento where vegetarians were offered the choice of 'egg' or 'cheese'. If they took the 'egg' option they were given ONE fried egg, nothing else, just the egg.

If they took the “cheese” option they were given a small block of cheese and nothing else.

The restaurant owners could not understand the problem with this and it took a lot of complaining before the company decided to use another restaurant.
