Idea for King Harold statue

IN response to the article in last weeks Observer, I applaud Cllr Furness for raising the question ‘why is there no statue in Battle to mark the historic occasion.’

In 2005 Beautiful Battle approached the Estates Committee of Battle Town Council, of which Cllr Paula Fisher was a member, with a proposal to create such a commemorative statue on the roundabout.

The committee, who had at a previous meeting agreed to a programme of removing the cordilynes, overturned this decision, and no further discussion of re-landscaping the roundabout could be taken forward.

Beautiful Battle had invited artist Jon Stiles (jnr) to produce some drawings on how an open metalwork sculpture might look in this location.

These computer graphic sketches have recently been sent, at their request, to Battle Museum of Local History, who had also posed the same question.

I hope that Cllr Furness will have the support in council to progress his proposal.
