Sally-Ann Hart starts her article on the Agriculture Bill (October 23) by stating her wish to “clearly explain my views” on the Bill and various amendments. I am sorry to say that having read it several times I am none the wiser.

She first reaffirms her own and the Government’s commitment that “it will not compromise on our high environmental protections, animal welfare or food standards in trade negotiations”. Very good so far. However, she goes on to say that in order to unlock “incredible global opportunities for British farmers” we must not “impose our food, agricultural production and husbandry methods on future trade partners”.

Does this mean we can import products produced to inferior standards, or have a range of inferior production methods for export produce only while remaining virtuous in what we consume ourselves? Or magically unlock these incredible opportunities without exporting or importing at all?

Please can Ms Hart explain in simple terms how we can reconcile not compromising our standards with not imposing our standards?
