Individuals must be free to vote

In his contribution to the letters page (11/12/15) Steven Jackson presents an interesting, if not altogether convincing, view of democracy.

Commenting on Jeremy Corbyn’s performance in relation to the debate on military action in Syria, Steven asks “What was he thinking giving his MPs a free vote?”.

Well, Steve, all I can say is that my idea of democracy, be it within a political party or within the nation as a whole, is that individuals make decisions according to their own beliefs, values and consciences.

In advocating an all-powerful party machine which manages by diktat he reminds me of the old Soviet system, now discredited and consigned to 20th-century history.

On a matter as serious as warfare I’m surprised that, in this day and age, Mr Jackson still cannot accept that democratic principles should guide our nation’s response to the world in which we live.
