Is this not market support?

GREGORY Barker and his fellow Energy Minister Mr Hayes were both answering Energy Questions in the House of Commons last week.

Mr Hayes was clearly in a rumbustious mood and took the opportunity to knock wind farms.

He was also rather rude and dismissive in response to Liberal Democrat questions about Nuclear Power - included in his response was the following: “Let me be crystal clear. There will be...no market support for electricity supplied or capacity provided by a private sector new nuclear operator.”

A recent working paper from the highly respected Energy Policy Research Group at Cambridge University states: Nuclear Power has “the potential for causing accidental nuclear damage that is widespread and catastrophic where no company, including insurance companies, would have the financial capacity to underwrite the cost.”

So the Government will have to underwrite the risk. Is this not market support?
