Issues failure keeps me away from Arun

A YEAR ago I rented a flat with a view to finally retiring to this area. Rather than commit to a property purchase, it seemed sensible to rent before burning my bridges and settling in Rustington/Littlehampton.

After much soul-searching, I have decided to abandon my plans for the following reasons:

Officials in the parish council, town hall, highways department, seem elusive and evasive when approached on local issues.

A campaign appeared in your wonderful newspaper last autumn, with readers expressing their concerns on the so-called "Mad Mile", the road from Sea Lane, Rustington, to the new East Beach Caf.

I have written to various departments, expressing my concerns about this road, to no avail. Still, lunatics with fast cars and noisy exhausts drive along this stretch at ludicrous speeds.

I have suggested road humps, speed cameras, chicanes, etc, but get the impression that, until someone is killed or seriously injured, nothing will be done.

The pedestrianisation of Pier Road, Littlehampton, could have transformed the area, with al fresco dining, but traffic still takes precedence and I am informed that the area will be destroyed by the raising of the sea wall, in line with over-zealous sea defence measures.

Even the so-called world's longest bench has now dropped that claim, and as I write, seems no nearer completion.

The attitude of locals, as expressed in your columns, seems to be that, unlike Obama and Cameron, change is not good, the status quo is perfect. So the area remains in a timewarp, with thugs ruling the roads, officials reluctant to change, and life plods along, oblivious to the demise happening around them.

Littlehampton has a wonderful beach, but the noise and speeding in Sea Road ruins its charm.

Simple changes, as outlined, could make this a wonderful seaside resort, but I am not confident that change is imminent.

My search for a seaside retirement home continues.
