Issues ignored

I SEEM to recall a few years ago, when Inspire Leisure took over the running of recreation facilities from Arun District Council, that we were promised there would be no reduction in the amenities provided.

Over the last couple of years, Maltravers Park has deteriorated rapidly under the (mis)management of Inspire Leisure.

The Queen Mother Commem-orative Rose Garden was the first to go, being dug up and replaced with turf. Last year the marvellous flowerbeds on two sides of the bowling green suffered the same fate. I assume these measures were taken to save gardening costs.

This summer, Inspire Leisure abandoned the putting green and that area has now become an exercise green for dogs. There has also been a clear lack of maintenance to the grass tennis courts which, together with the increase in prices, have led to very poor patronage of that facility. Perhaps it is a ploy by Inspire Leisure so that they can abandon the courts, thus saving themselves more money.

It also seems that Inspire Leisure are not alone in the provision of poor service to residents in and around Maltravers Drive.

I sent emails about this issue to our recently elected River ward Arun district councillors: David Britton, who lives in Rustington, and Jacky Pendleton, who lives in Middleton-on-Sea.

Despite reminders, neither has bothered to reply to me, or even to acknowledge my emails. Arun council has confirmed that there are no problems with their email system.

Perhaps the 444 people who voted for David Britton, and the 385 people who voted for Jacky Pendleton, a lecturer at Reading University, should be aware of the apparent lack of interest these two Conservative councillors have in Littlehampton issues.
