Keep our council independent

ON September 17, a by-election will take place to fill the current vacancy on Rustington Parish Council in the West ward, following the resignation of councillor Mike Warrington.

For as many years as I can remember, the parish council has been completely apolitical, and that is the way I presume the local community would want it to remain.

Unlike on other town and parish councils, politics do not play a part in any decisions made by the parish council.

Obviously, every member of the council has their own political views, which are highly respected by all councillors, but these views are not aired at meetings, nor are they ever evident in any decisions the council might make.

Indeed, some members of the council, including myself, are also district and/or county councillors, and were elected to these positions as members of a specific political party.

In my experience, as a member of the parish council for some 10 years, because politics has never been an issue affecting decisions, the village has been able to become one of the most progressive parish councils in not only the Arun district, but also, in my opinion, across the county.

So, on September 17, I would urge every parish elector living in the West ward, to vote to keep Rustington Parish Council independent, for the benefit of the village and its community.

Eligible electors will shortly be receiving polling cards, and the polling stations on the day will be the Village Memorial Hall, Woodland Centre, Woodlands Avenue; the Methodist Church hall, Claigmar Road, and St Andrew's United Reformed Church hall, Holmes Lane.

So, please, don't forget, use your vote to ensure that the parish council retains its independent status for many years to come.
