LETTER: Be thankful this harvest

It’s the time of year for harvest festivals - but for those of us who have grown up in towns and cities, multiple steps removed from the actual production processes, looking instead to our supermarkets and corner shops as our source of produce, isn’t harvest a bit of an anachronism?

We don’t (most of us) plough the field and scatter, so why do we make such a big thing about it? While the emphasis on harvest festivals may be a historical by-product of a society closely connected to agriculture, it still has an importance in our modern lives, providing a much needed reminder to be thankful.

Thankfulness is a key feature of a healthy mental attitude. Think of the ‘best’ people you know - I bet they’re positive and thankful. The Bible tells us that in Jesus ‘all things hold together’, and however exactly you understand that, recognising that we are recipients of goodness from outside of our own control is vital to life.

So why not make a special effort to be thankful this harvest!
