LETTER: Consider impact of population growth

As a resident of Gosport I have been following, at a distance, the local campaign to oppose the new town at Wineham (LAMBS).

Whilst being unable to offer any direct support to your campaign, other than express my sadness, I would like to make your readers aware of the charity Population Matters.

This is an environmental organisation concerned with the unchecked growth of the Earth’s population, which has tripled since 1950, and the detrimental effect this is having on the environment.

This, of course, includes destruction of the rain forests, overfishing of the oceans, extinction of thousands of species of flora and fauna, pollution and the overcrowding of our towns and cities.

We are not a political or religious organisation and seek to attract new members from all ethnic groups/religions and backgrounds.

We are not against children... in fact the majority of our members are parents, and frequently grandparents.

All we do is encourage people to consider the population growth caused by having more than two children and the resulting loss of countryside as these children grow into adults requiring their own homes.

Hardly a day passes without a new story emerging of a new housing development gobbling up so many hundred acres of Green Belt.

If you can spare a few minutes, please feel free to browse our website - www.populationmatters.org - and you will see that we have such respected patrons as David Attenborough, Jonathon Porritt, Chris Packham, Jane Goodall, James Lovelock and Susan Hampshire.

Only by taking action to contain the human population now can we possibly prevent future generations( my great grandchildren and your great grandchildren) from having a greatly impoverished quality of life. PEOPLE NEED SPACE!
