I attended the opening of the Shoreham air crash inquests at Horsham with a colleague of mine, to help support the families of the victims of this terrible accident.

We are a group of six working, as volunteers , to help our Coroners’ Office in West Sussex, which also covers Worthing and Chichester Courts.

The families do not always have liaison officers from the police, in attendance, so we fill that role in court whenever we are needed.

Inquests are not usually discussed, or on anybody’s radar, until suddenly it happens to individuals, when their lives are torn apart, by tragedy.

It is very daunting attending an inquest, so we are there to explain, support and give emotional comfort to the family members at a very sad time.

We have to rely mostly on donations, and a small government grant, however it is unlike other charities just by the nature of the emotional involvement.

The charity was founded a few years ago, by a lady called Roey Burden, who on attending an inquest, supporting a friend, realised that there was a desperate need for help and emotional support. Since then from a small beginning at one court in London , it has grown and grown to a nationwide presence in many of our courts.
