LETTER: Freedom Food sets standards

Your readers may be amused to know that in a new survey by the RSPCA’s Freedom Food, nearly one in ten people in the South East said they had tasted ‘chicken trotters’ and some even said they had tried ‘pigs’ wings’.

Of course this is nonsense and most of us know that pigs don’t fly and chickens don’t trot – don’t we?

But it does highlight a more serious issue.

The majority of our farm animals are kept in conditions which don’t strive to give them a good life.

If people knew more about what they were eating and the lives of animals that produce their food, I think they would care more about how those animals are reared.

That’s why during this week, which is Farm Animal Week, Freedom Food is asking people to find out more about the amazing lives of farm animals and swap at least one item in their shopping basket for a higher welfare label such as Freedom Food.

Products labelled Freedom Food mean they have come from a farm monitored by the RSPCA.

It’s simple really, the more people choose labels like Freedom Food, the more farmers will be encouraged to adopt higher welfare standards and the more farm animals will have a better life.
