LETTER: Have your say on warden proposal

The Parish Councils of Billingshurst and Pulborough have been working together over the last three years to deliver youth work to their parishes through a cluster arrangement by working together and sharing costs.

The scheme has been so successful that the Parish Councils are now looking to collaborate again for the provision of a Community Warden for the parishes of Billingshurst and Pulborough.

National evaluation has found that in areas that have Community Wardens:

Quality of life has improved.

Wardens have reduced fear of crime, particularly for older people.

Wardens are helping to tackle environmental problems.

Youth anti-social behaviour is being impacted.

Crime rates in scheme areas have declined.

Sussex Police unveiled a new Policing Model earlier this year that requires them to save £56 million by 2020. They have plans in place for their emergency service which includes officers and staff working closely with partners.

It is this role that could be fulfilled by a Community Warden to extend the work of the Parish Councils, support the Community Police Hubs, and undertake outreach work in the community alongside the Community Youth Worker, Village Agent, Street Pastors, Chamber of Commerce and schools.

The Police and Crime Commissioner is providing some funding to introduce Community Warden cluster pilots in West Sussex.

Billingshurst and Pulborough Parish Councils have bid to become one of these pilots starting April 2016. The balance of the cost will be funded through an increase in the parish element of the council tax.
