LETTER: Make way for a better future

What a good gesture of MP Huw Merriman, not only to raise awareness of the migrant issue, but to visit one of the camps in Syria.

I find it mind blowing to imagine a camp for 80,000 (twice the population of all Bexhill) and trying to cope with all the infrastructure for water, sanitation, shopping etc and even places to attempt to have education classes and health and medical sessions.

So many people displaced, damaged psychologically as well as physically and a worsening vision for their future. Lebanon next door with a population of about four million has about 1.5 million refugees also!

There are, as we are aware, many millions more on the move across Africa and Europe, with greater and less receptions as they stumble.

Why are those human beings, our brothers and sisters in this global human family, displaced? It’s generally recognised that most people wish to remain happily in the pleasant happy environment where they grow up.

So, what causes this turmoil from which they flee, leaving behind many family and friends hungry, unhealthy and even dead and mutilated?

The migrant situation is a symptom of what is happening. It will continue and get worse if the causes are not addressed.

I believe there are six main causes. Where does responsibility lie?

The Global Justice Now group of Bexhill and Hastings is holding a session from 10.30 to 12.30 on Saturday, October 22 at the Quaker / Society of Friends Hall in Albert Road, Bexhill ( opposite the De La Warr Pavilion), entrance free.

Aidan Cantwell,justice and peace advisor for A&B, and Jane Grimshaw, Hastings Refugees, are among the speakers while I will be talking about the Global Justice views.
