LETTER: Misunderstanding leads to mishap

It is good to see that the permanent traffic lights in Horsham’s East Street are now back in working order after several weeks of queues at the junction and waits to escape from the end of New Street.

However, something has now been added on each road approaching the lights, namely a bright large green patch with a white rampant cycle painted on it. I have asked several people if they know its purpose but have, so far, have not found anyone who does. I wondered if it is to indicate to cyclists that there is no need to observe the red lights but this seems rather unnecessary when many already disregard traffic lights.

Perhaps it is to make the road look smarter before the Tour de France cyclists arrive or even to make Horsham a little greener before the In Bloom Competition. I hope it is not there to indicate an area where “wheelies” can be performed!

It would be useful if someone could please enlighten us on this subject before a misunderstanding leads to a mishap.
