LETTER: New businesses

I read with interest the comments by Jane Wood on the lack of vision demonstrated by Arun District Council, and sadly must agree with every word.

Having run a business in the Arun area for the past 40 years I am only too aware of the obstruction, lack of forwarding planning and petty bureaucracy exhibited by the planning department.

Their first answer to any suggestion of expansion is always no, and if one is still anxious to proceed, you can expect a fight for everything.

We now have a situation whereby the council is building hundreds of new homes with no infrastructure to support them.

The roads are quite unable to take the extra traffic and every journey now must be factored into allowing for considerable delays.

A lack of schools, medical facilities and employment is also obvious.

So where are all these people going to work?

Surely it must be obvious that before building the houses, facilities for encouraging new businesses into the area must be paramount.

At least that way, the new home-owners won’t be forced to travel outside the area for work.

In conversations with other businesses over the years, I have realised that Arun District Council has provided itself with a considerable reputation for obstruction.

Seemingly its only desire is to create ever more supermarkets in the area, thus exacerbating an already overworked local road network.

Wake Up Arun, we might need more houses, but we also need more businesses, not only existing ones to expand, but a system to encourage outside businesses to relocate to this area.
