LETTER: Simply upgrade existing centre

‘Send us your thoughts’ is your message and so I am unclear as to whether the letter published from Jonathan Chowen are his thoughts or those of HDC which he represents.

He says that ‘the evolving consensus between councillors, officers, sports clubs and the public is that the provision of of a brand new sports centre will increase the capacity of the site and extend its scope and appeal’.

Clearly he has overlooked the number of ‘excellent letters’ questioning the rationale for replacing an already adequate facility to accommodate new activities such as basketball, volleyball, handball, climbing and indoor cricket whilst improving provision for badminton, dance, fitness gym, 5-a-side football, gymnastics, keep fit, table tennis, trampolining and a raft of other activities.

Just taking the example of gymnastics, the Pavilions already has a dedicated facility which is in use most hours of the day and requires much specialised equipment totally unsuitable for a sports hall.

The tone of the letter indicates that the new leisure centre is already a ‘done deal’ but now that the running track is being retained, there must be a case for simply upgrading or redeveloping the existing facilities (thereby retaining the Tube) also leaving the newly resurfaced all-weather multi-user facilities where they are.

I write as a leisure centre user.
