LETTER: The importance of sharing

There are occasions when people have come across overly zealous and appear pushy in the desire to acquire funding for particular charities. The recent County Times Comment rightly sounded a note of caution over certain such fundraising methods.

We must however be grateful for the tremendous work done for hundreds of various charities in our region. People willingly fundraise, appeal, volunteer, give of time and energy to raise awareness and funds for the charities close to their hearts. Society would be so much worse off without the fruit borne by such passion and energy.

But how about us as givers to charities? Most of us are blessed with health, comfort, warmth, food and relative financial security.

How generous are we with what we have? Do we give away only what we don’t want any more or the odd loose change here or there? Or do we recognise that as we are blessed we want to use that to be a blessing to others and therefore give generously, proportionately, systematically and regularly?

The Bible has much to say about the importance of sharing what we have. ‘You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.’ 2 Corinthians 9:7
