Lifting prom cycle ban would make us a much better resort

I AGREE with everything that Paul Power said in his letter (Gazette, March 27).

I live in Littlehampton and the ban on bicycles on the seafront has always seemed like a very bad idea.

Shouldn't the council be promoting greener travel on the grounds of personal health and climate change?

I am glad that the council is looking into lifting the ban on bicycles, this will make Littlehampton a much better seaside resort and will make it much more family orientated.

As for the letter from John Nicholson in the same issue, his thoughts on bicycles being dangerous are in my opinion completely unfounded.

Anyone is far more likely to be run into by one of the Shopmobility scooters that zip across the seafront at fast speeds, or to be run over by the train which also goes up and down the promenade.

At least when bicycles are allowed on the seafront they will keep to a cycle lane.

In addition, it is now law that all bicycles must have a bell on them.

I think that you will find that there are many responsible cyclists who are missing out on the opportunity of having a traditional cycle across a lovely British seafront.

The type of people who recklessly cycle at fast speeds across the front will currently be doing this regardless of any byelaw that is imposed by the council.
