Memorial that would truly last is needed

ALAN Everson has a very valid point on the Longest Bench. It will need access points, which makes it invalid as a long bench.

The design has its merits, but the application is really too much of a gimmick. It will be required to be painted on a regular basis. It may last 50 years, then vanish without a trace '“ so much for a reminder of

Anita Roddick. The Chinese building is a fine monument for her, but that could change and she would be lost again.

Let's do something that will last for centuries, a pedestrian subway under the mouth of the river, starting at the oyster pond and emerging at the Black Shed.

The locals can enjoy a walk around the river, have a pint at the local pub, tourists will have access to West Beach, it's a win-win situation.

Does it cost so much for something that could last 1,000 years?
