Memories of Horsham Market

I was very interested in the photo of the Horsham Market in the Memory Lane feature. I used to live at 16 Park Street which was nearly opposite Piries Place so it was my short cut to the Carfax and market.

During the war it was the home of Benson’s Fair and was open most of the time. Mr Benson used to be in charge of the bumper cars, I believe they had the caravans in which they lived in.

The market had all kinds of stalls, Mr Standford had a greengrocer’s as well as a shop in East Street.

The owner of the market was Douglas Durrant, and the had a house furnisher’s shop at the Carfax end of the market.

What a pity it was all knocked down with the little houses in Piries Place, they call it progress!

My very happy days in Horsham are not forgotten.
