Money is wasted

HOW I agree with recent correspondents over the amount of money wasted each year on what is a non-theatre called the De La Warr Pavilion. A total of £500.000 each 12 months and what do we get for it? A theatre closed for more time than it is open, art exhibitions appealing to a few rather than the masses and precious little else. There is even a bandstand (hardly worthy of the name) which is rarely if ever used.

This venue should have a regular ongoing programme of events on a weekly basis, not the once-in-a-blue-moon show that we have at present.

I would ask the management why is there so little in the way of shows, plays or music put on there? What is the £500,000 being spent on?

Surely the best answer to the problem would be to knock it down and build a decent leisure area with a pool and sports facilities, together with a small concert hall, in its place. Alternatively it could always be turned into an indoor shopping centre to go with the shops underneath.

Even this would be better than paying out year after year for a listed white elephant hardly used. And a final thought: what do the management do there during those long periods of emptiness?
