Mortar action not a risk worth taking

AFTER reading your article (Gazette, May 20) about Christopher Jones, who took a Second World War bomb into Littlehampton police station, I find myself absolutely flabbergasted that someone would do something so stupid, despite countless warnings in the news over the years advising the public to leave them to the experts.

He obviously has enough sense to think that a red band means the bomb is armed, and therefore a risk.

He also sat down to think about what he should do with it, again knowing it is a risk.

So why, oh why, pick it up and take it to a police station, risking the lives of those in the station and the vulnerable residents of the adjacent nursing home?

And then, to comment in your article that he was bemused by the police's said over-reaction!

Perhaps said bomb exploding in the back of his van whilst he was driving along might have knocked in a little sense.
