New plans needed

THE East Preston parish poll has fairly decisively rejected the scheme for a large village hall extension.

But the parish council can put forward a revised project.

What is needed now is for the council to set out long-term policy commitments for all the land it owns or administers.

Such as, that the present cricket field shall remain open space and only cricket club buildings be erected there, within their present general area, and that Two Acres, a further piece of land to the south of the field, shall remain open space without any form of building.

A recent parish council newsletter considerably understated its property.

Land acquired in 1948 at Homelands is leased to a tennis club. There is also the Gordon bequest land of 1936, next to the cricket field, given for a bowls green, which the club has leased since 1967.

The greatest asset is the cricket field, given by the Rev Warren, the vesting assent made in 1943.

This land is specifically for recreation, and also includes Two Acres, the present Village Hall, and play area adjoining.

Much of this land might have been sold and lost to the village, and only narrow decisions prevented this.

The very least that might be expected is that land given for recreation should be clearly designated for that purpose.

Use of any part for a parish office, as it is today, is not recreation.

The council should commit itself to finding a new site for this office.

There is bound to be considerable expenditure one way or another.

An improved play area, and acquiring a building for a parish office, at the least.
