New site not fit for sports centre

The Arun District Council meeting to discuss leisure facilities in Littlehampton left me with a depressing feeling of a done deal.

Only one option appeared to be under consideration and the preferred option of most people, rebuilding on the present site, was not given much attention.

The suggested new site is most unsuitable from a traffic point of view.

It is on a busy stretch of road between two roundabouts, at both of which serious delays are already encountered.

Further house building is likely to make this worse.

The proposed Fitzalan extension going south/north will not help east/west traffic and could add to the problem, as there will be another junction. No public transport goes along this road.

The present swimming pool site is off a not too busy road and has good car parking space. The number 12 bus, which serves the Wickbourne estate and Courtwick, stops immediately outside the centre. The number 9 bus, which serves Horsham Road and the Beaumont estate, stops further along Sea Road. The site is an attractive one and complements other leisure facilities in the area, which seems to make sense, particularly for summer visitors.

Littlehampton people campaigned long and hard for a swimming pool. Now it seems they must campaign all over again.
