No cash gain if sites are sold

I ATTENDED the Littlehampton Town Council meeting On September 27, and am very concerned about the possibility of closing not only the Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre, but also the Windmill Entertainment Centre, for several reasons.

Having read the draft leisure strategy prepared for Arun District Council by the consultants Colliers International, I cannot see any benefits from any of their proposals.

The suggestion to move the swimming pool to the Littlehampton Academy site would restrict its use by the public and there would be car parking problems – the current site has a large car park and is very accessible for people travelling from outlying areas.

The Windmill, as town councillors said at their meeting, has had its grant reduced in recent years by Arun, therefore causing financial difficulties for Inspire Leisure. This is a long-standing facility for the residents and should be kept at all costs. The financial problem is not helped by the fact that Arun does not grant an alcohol licence to the Windmill.

Referring to any financial gain from developing the Windmill and swimming centre sites, having read the draft strategy, I can’t see any monetary gain for Arun in the proposals. At the town council meeting, a councillor stated that Arun had a substantial cash reserve at present, I assume earning very little income at current interest rates. In this time of austerity, it would be a feel-good factor it Arun was to reduce some of that reserve for the benefit of the community

As Arun is controlled by the Conservative party, can I suggest not to have a three-line whip on any motions, if and when thedecisions are taken, and let it be a free vote.

We have a seafront to treasure. Please do not spoil it with more flats.
