No one asked us about a bridge

I READ Kenneth W. Grimes’s letter (Gazette, October 4), about the proposal approved by the Joint Eastern Arun Area Committee that work should proceed on a pedestrian/cycle way over the railway at Mill Lane Rustington, coupled with the repositioning of the footpaths on Mill Lane.

It is worth mentioning that,as far as I know, those residents of Mill Lane whose properties lie at the foot of the road embankment and who may be affected by this proposal, have not been consulted.

In fact, the section of Mill Lane most affected by this proposal is not under the control of the local authority or West Sussex County Council, it is in private ownership and the occupiers of properties adjoining it have both rights of access to and from the main road (the B2187),via Mill Lane, and obligations to each other for keeping this section of Mill Lane open and in good order.

Whilst I can see the advantage to users of the proposed footpath/cycleway, it is difficult to see how construction could be confined to the main highway or the embankment, without imposing on the rights and obligations of adjoining properties; and by the way, I suspect neither the bridge over the railway or the now redundant part of Mill Lane were constructed to accept the loading of a heavy-lift crane or other machinery; and the railway is the main line from Brighton to Southampton.

Perhaps Mr Grimes’ letter is intended as an announcement, but I think the committee may, at its next meeting, find a bit more to discuss!
