Our pavements in Lewes need treating with more respect

Just a few days prior to receiving my Southern Water bill, including an apology for inadequate environmental performance, a small team emerged from vehicles bearing the logos of Southern Water and Clancy Docwra (experts in construction) appeared in my road (Malling Street).

They removed a paving stone to access my neighbours’ service pipe and left the pavement in a mess.

I have asked Southern Water to make good the damage done and replace paving stones that have been removed or damaged.

The pavements in this Lewes conservation area are in disrepair and have already been scarred by the laying of broadband fibres.

At some points the road surface is level with the kerb because of lazy re-surfacing and double yellow lines have been applied across drains so that paint material has fallen into the sewage system.

The way in which Southern Water has serviced or replaced its access points has only added to the general neglect and disrespect shown to Lewes and those who live and work there.

Who is ultimately responsible for the state of our roads and pavements?
