Put the kettle on

BEING just a couple of years younger than Olivia Ayton, I read of her experiences (Gazette Nostalgia feature, August 18) with great interest.

However, I was astounded to read her assertion that meat, tea, sugar, butter, etc., were not available until after the war.

Although strictly rationed, every one of these items remained available throughout the whole of the war years.

No tea during the war? Unthinkable!

Directly an air raid was over there was only on thing on our minds – put the kettle on!

Anyone under 70 years old reading Olivia’s experiences would imagine that we survived for more than five years on a diet of potatoes, carrots and Oxo gravy!
