Royal retirement?

ANDREW Marr’s recent fine film on the Queen made little reference to the heir to the throne (in contrast to frequent clips with William and Harry) – there was just one, when Andrew mentioned that, at 63, Charles is the oldest heir-apparent in the world.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if, after the diamond jubilee celebrations, the Queen announced her retirement? If anyone deserves a rest, she does – and so does her consort, bless him.

Otherwise, if she lives as long as her mother, poor Prince Charles may be nearing his 80s before acceding to the throne. That’s cruel.
