Rudgwick Primary chosen in project to develop international links in Kenya

Rudgwick Primary School is delighted to have been chosen earlier this year as part of a Government and British Council initative, Connecting Classrooms.

The School has been chosen due to its commitment to teaching students about global issues.

Rudgwick Primary has been twinned with Misemwa School in Kenya, with teachers and students learning how to become responsible global citizens, and to develop skills to work within the Global economy. Various exchange visits have taken place and recently the Deputy Head of the Misemwa School visited Rudgwick.

Evans Adalo spent two weeks at the school fully participating in school life. The children gave Evans a fantastic welcome with every child making a flag and lining the corridor for his arrival, followed by a special assembly. Evans spent time in every class, teaching Kiswahili, volleyball, maths and Kenyan stories as well as teaching some classes the Kenyan National Anthem, and made maize porridge with the Kenyan Council children.

Evans wrote of his visit: “I was given a big welcome by teachers and pupils led by the able head teacher Ms Amie Bowers.

“I observed various classes and was amazed with group work teaching where learners participate very actively. The school has lots of teaching and learning resources. The children were inquisitive to know about Kenya and I enjoyed interacting with pupils both inside and outside the class. Teachers were so friendly. I will hardly forget their table which ever had snacks and fruit!”

The children really enjoyed having their visitor in the school and learning about life in another country.

Callum said: “ Evans was really, really friendly. We liked him reading a Kenyan story to us”, while Luke said “He taught us how to cook Kenyan porridge, it was lovely”.

Libby thought: “He was funny and he would make us all laugh. We enjoyed talking to someone from a different country.”
