Status quo is maintained

Class was invented by the establishment to justify their ill-gotten gains and to point to the contrast between the uncouth lower orders – Andrew Mitchell had a more colourful description of us – and their own supposed refinement and innate superiority.

So, back to Mr Sumner (Last word on the National Anthem, October 23) who tells us his letter was about history and wait for it, ‘good manners’. What, no breeding?

Indeed, Richard, you don’t need to say any more.

The entitlement illusion (pace Nick Duffell in his Wounded Leaders) bubbles away.

Coming from anyone else that ‘good manners’ would be an insult.

Where were Mitchell’s good manners or David Mellor’s in the Cabgate affair?

But coming from the establishment such uncouth behaviour has become acceptable, even humorous.

And so the status quo is maintained and the real class warriors continue to rule.
