Suspect motives

I am writing to comment on Colin Lusty’s letter (regarding the retail unit for the Chandlers site in Rustington.

Whilst I agree that there are clearly many empty shops that could be used, I find the motives of Arun District Council in declining the redevelopment application as more than suspicious.

Having invested the money from what is arguably Rustington’s section 106 payment, from Sainsbury’s, in a development officer for Littlehampton, it surely points to Arun possibly wanting to prevent Rustington from becoming an even bigger retail rival to the near-dead Littlehampton town centre.

I am not sure why anyone living in Rustington would prefer a car showroom over a smart compendium of retail outlets, but if the owners think that redeveloping the site, when Chandlers move out to their greenfield site near ASDA, would improve the retail experience in Rustington, then it is surely their risk, their money.
