The nation truly deserves better than the false rhetoric from Amber Rudd, the energy and climate change secretary when she claims leaving the EU will lead to an '˜electric shock' in the markets, causing fuel bills to '˜rocket' by £500m a year, when in fact the very opposite is the truth.

Shame on her, she is a disgrace to her department (DECC) and the country in attempting to spread such ill-founded scare stories.

But then what ‘electrical sense’ can you expect from a person who graduated with a degree in history from the University of Edinburgh – with absolutely no disrespect to historians or Edinburgh – do you put a cobbler in charge of a butcher’s shop?

Indeed, do the good folk of Hastings and Rye, who voted for Amber Rudd, realise the disgraceful misinformation she is peddling?

For it is chasing mindless and economy-destroying climate change EU targets, building costly and
ineffective onshore and offshore wind farms that
are not only destroying our power industry, but threatening the whole of the UK economy.

This government blindness is compounded with the pursuit of the horrendously costly and foreign owned (EDF) Hinkley Point Nuclear Power station – which will certainly push up the cost of electricity to the consumer it surely is an Alice in Wonderland moment when our…er…business astute government is guaranteeing three times the current price of generated electricity to the foreign owners, such is the madness of it all.

Why on earth are we not building modern efficient and relatively cheap gas-fired (CCGT) power stations, especially when the world is awash with cheap gas – competitive ethane gas that is now being imported by the chemical giant
Ineos, Grangemouth, Scotland (www.ineos.com) from the US to Norway – shale gas has transformed the US economy.

Regarding renewables, every 15-year-old will
know we are surrounded by the sea, with the Bristol Channel having the second highest tidal range on the planet.

So why has government been wasting billions on flawed wind technology and not investing this money in tidal energy – why are they dragging their feet with the Swansea tidal project?

Therefore I would respectfully suggest that Amber Rudd urgently needs to change her light to red, stop the nonsense, adopt some sensible policies before the lights start going out – and not to add to the silly and unwarranted scare stories of both Cameron and Osborne…to reiterate…we, as a nation, deserve better!
