This is what we call privatisation

Huw Merriman writes at length about the poor service of train operators Southern and Southeastern (In the House, January 22).

Well Huw, it is called privatisation. The fact is the chief beneficiaries of privatisation are a relative handful of companies – and individuals – many of which are foreign state-owned.

In other words, we are subsidising foreign transport, energy and other public services.

As for the railways, Huw’s big beef here, they were privatised by none other than his former boss, John Major.

Major is the archetypal Tory harking back to a mythical 1950s golden era when, amongst other things, we had ‘real’ trains.

The reality is, as well as costing some four times as much as the former British Rail, privatisation has wrecked the railways.

So, Huw, it is no use your challenging the department for transport or whatever.

A political decision is required and I don’t see you or your party making it.
