Thoughtless drivers

I HAVE just been for a very pleasant walk along the river down to the sea.

When I say walk, my husband is disabled and relies on his mobility scooter to enjoy such pleasures.

On the return journey we crossed from the boating lake onto Pier Road, as we know just outside Osca’s restaurant there is a dropped kerb, enabling my husband to get across the road.

We had a slight problem, though, as on the double yellow lines and across the dropped kerb there was a car parked with a young girl inside on the passenger side.

I asked if the car would be there for much longer, as we needed to cross the road, and we were told her boyfriend was just getting some chips. So we waited and after about 10 minutes another disabled buggy came along, also wanting to cross the road.

We now had a queue and I think the young lady was rather embarrassed, as she got out of the car to hurry her boyfriend along. They both came out of the chip shop on what my husband can only dream of, which is two healthy legs. No apology, no remorse just a burning of rubber as the driver furiously moved out of the way, giving us a filthy look.

At this point I stood in the road, as a lady in a 4x4 was vying for the spot. Both buggies crossed the road and we continued home.

Why is it that fit, healthy people make a point of causing the elderly and disabled as much difficulty as they possibly can? God forbid anything should happen to them and the joy of seeing a dropped kerb brings a highlight to their day, only to have it dashed away by inconsideration.

I hope now there is one driver who thinks before parking across one, but I somehow doubt he will even give it a second thought.

There are few enough dropped kerbs in this area and to have them blocked by drivers who are able to walk a few more feet is just total inconsideration for anyone else.

Thank you for letting me have my rant.
