Am I alone is wondering when we will see any progress in making the centre of Hailsham more amenable for walking and cycling?

The pandemic precipitated the government to rethink town and city transport with an announcement of money for emergency schemes to encourage walking and cycling.

I understand that East Sussex Highways have secured funds for a scheme to close Hailsham High Street to cars thus allowing for wider pavements and keeping access for busses and cycles.

There are also proposals for extra cycle storage.

A consultation process has been initiate but I am informed that should there be significant objections the scheme will not proceed.

I daresay there will be objections on the grounds of loss of trade. This is despite evidence to the contrary from other areas.

Following a lengthy correspondence I get the impression that East Sussex are less than enthusiastic about such measures.

Why is it taking so long while other schemes are up and running around the country?

The pandemic has raised the whole issue of sustainable transport in the UK. We lag behind so many nations in Europe, particularly Holland and Denmark.

The Hailsham neighbourhood plan recognises the fractured nature of cycling provision in the town. The Cuckoo Trail is a great asset but access to and from it is difficult with cyclists having to brave the traffic on London and South Roads.

Longer term the status quo is unsustainable as more and more housing is built, putting further strain on already stretched parking resources.

If more people cycle it will allow more space for those who must drive for various reasons including health or disability.

I too drive on occasions but am trying to make more use of my cycle for short trips but genuinely find cycling in the town intimidating.

This is the time for bold steps to make getting about Hailsham better for all on foot, two and four wheels.
