Trashing our ancient places

The boundary review for Arun district betrays both a total conflict of philosophy and ignorance of locality, especially with respect to East Preston.

This is the product of statisticians concerned with little more than numbers of electors, in equalised “wards” – a name that reduces everyone to a number.

I dare say most people want their villages or parishes represented, as well understood and socially meaningful communities.

East Preston and Kingston should be represented by several councillors, elected as a group. Every parish or group of parishes should be similarly represented.

As for the proposed names for new parish council wards, Langmead has almost no meaning to anyone and Angmering-on-Sea is a mere estate in East Preston, and not the other way round.

The whole of East Preston and Kingston have been together for hundreds of years, and every social institution reflects this fact.

Ancient parishes and villages are being actively trashed.
