Upheaval ‘foisted’

FURTHER to my letter (Gazette, February 16), and the revelations in your article of the same issue about would-be applicants for the post of Sussex police and crime commissioner, it is even worse than I feared. Your story referred to the vast areas to be covered, the enormous upheaval being foisted upon forces already under huge financial strain in the current climate, while the political inference would be more blatant than I imagined. In addition, when the police authority is disbanded, who will interview and appoint chief officers? Will it be another centralisation – a job for the Home Office, or another quango? Or is it an attempt to form a national police force by the back door?

It would be interesting to know how many applicants there would be if it were a voluntary post.
