We need to show our support

The issues raised by Jay Brewerton and others need to be aired. Over recent years I have dealt with a number of parents in my ward who had children with autism.

The situation is improving but their children’s treatment at schools was always an issue, staff did not have the training or understanding to deal with an outburst from an autistic child who needed support.

This used to result in the child being sent home and banned from school for a few days.

The child who needs a set routine in their life could not understand why they could not attend school.

Autistic children respond well to kindness, patience and a friendly smile.

Autistic children need social inclusion just like any other child and we need to show our support and understanding for parents like Jay and others when they are out with their children in the community.

It is so important that parents have support when bringing up children with autism and it is great there are support groups. But we, as a society, should not discriminate because we lack knowledge and understanding of the challenges of autism.
