What does the Government get?

Mr Maling (in his letter entitled ‘information is readily available’) is very kind in directing us to the Charity Commission and suggesting we should view church’s audited accounts.

I’m sure Mike (Lynott) and I could spend many a happy hour doing this, and I have already in some cases.

However to save time, it is quicker to look at the reports at the top of organisations like the Church of England which combine all the smaller accounts into a national picture.

The 1-5 per cent of yearly income of churches given to charity I don’t believe can be challenged, as various reports show this to be to case.

Neither that churches rely for their continued survival not on their members but on government funding from tax payers.

I now wish to raise, what is for me, the most important question. What does the government get for funding churches?

In the case of the Church of England it is suggested that the government pays over £300 million every year. This is a conservative figure, because of money given via other pots.

As Stephen has been brave enough to stand up and speak for the churches, could he please tell Mike and me what the churches give the government in return for £300 million.
